INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE FOR YOUR CHILD’S HKAFO TWISTER CABLES

At your child’s fitting appointment you demonstrated that you are confident in donning the Twisters correctly. Correctly putting on your child’s orthosis is the most important key to insuring that it will be comfortable and function as it is intended. Anyone who puts the orthosis on your child should be able to demonstrate that they can do it correctly before being given that responsibility.

PURPOSE AND FUNCTION:

HKAFO Twister cables are used to address issues of internal and external rotation in the lower extremities that result with in/out toeing of the patient. The cables of the orthosis will apply a counterforce to properly rotate your child’s feet against the opposing force to create proper foot progression.

INSTRUCTIONS

With your child seated or lying on his/her back, put his/her shoes on while keeping the pelvic band behind the legs. Stand your child up placing the pelvic band around his/her pelvis and attach the Velcro straps around each leg just above the knee, if included.

Check your child’s feet periodically the first couple of days and as needed thereafter to make sure that there are no problems. Please call our office if your child develops any areas or red marks that last longer than 20 minutes to ½ hour.

POTENTIAL RISKS AND PRECAUTIONS:

Since the HKAFO Twister cables are applying a force against the lower extremities rotation, your child may be at risk for pain at the hip, knee, or ankle joints. If your child is experiencing issues with pain or skin irritation caused by the pelvic band, or if your child’s gait patterns have been negatively impacted as a result of the HKAFOs, please contact our office immediately.

HELPFUL TIPS

A thin, snug fitting sock with a heel works best. (Acrylic or polyester blends work well.)

The orthosis can be washed out with soap and water upon need. Allow it to air dry.

If the Velcro wears out, contact us and we will replace it.

Call us immediately if you have any problems or questions regarding the orthotics.
